At Precision Auto Care in San Leandro, we service and repair the regular Jetta and the GLI. The GLI badge on the trunk lid of a 2019 or later Jetta means a 2.0-liter turbo engine and, on automatic cars, a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Regular Jettas from those years use a smaller turbo engine with an eight-speed automatic, or a six-speed manual through the 2024 model year. Those two automatics need different fluid and a different service, so we identify the gearbox first and then plan the work around it.

Our work covers scheduled maintenance and the repairs that follow a new warning light or a change in the way your Jetta drives. For computer diagnostics, our ASE-certified mechanics use the AUTEL and OTIS scan tools.

Major Tune-Up

Every major tune-up on a turbo Jetta begins with engine oil and a filter that meet the specification for that engine. New spark plugs go in, and we inspect the belts and hoses during that service. On a direct-injected engine, fuel sprays straight into the cylinder instead of passing over the intake valves. With no fuel washing those valves, carbon can build on them on any direct-injected engine and cause rough running that new plugs do not fix.

Brake Replacement

Each rotor on your Jetta gets measured against its cast minimum thickness. A rotor with a smooth face may be worn thinner than that minimum. We machine a rotor only while enough metal sits above that minimum, and we replace it once it measures below. Your estimate lists each rotor as machined or replaced, based on that measurement.

COOLANT LEAKS AT THE WATER PUMP HOUSING

On the 1.8T in 2014-2018 Jettas and the 2.0T in the 2019 and later GLI, the water pump and the thermostat sit together in one plastic housing. Repeated heating and cooling can crack that housing until it seeps coolant. You may notice the coolant reservoir dropping between top-ups, or a coolant level warning on the dash. We fix that leak at the shared housing that holds the pump and thermostat. The system then gets refilled with the Volkswagen coolant type the engine specifies. If the temperature warning comes on while you drive, pull over safely and switch the engine off.

TWO THERMOSTATS ON THE 1.4T

The 1.4T in 2016-2021 Jettas carries two thermostats in its housing, one for the engine block and one for the cylinder head. That plastic housing bolts to the water pump, and it is another place coolant leaks out. Since a temperature fault on this engine might come from either thermostat, we diagnose which one has failed before we replace parts. Once the new parts are in, our refill uses the specified Volkswagen coolant.

MISFIRES AND IGNITION COILS

On a GLI, a failing ignition coil can bring on the check-engine light along with a shake at idle. Each cylinder on the 2.0T has its own coil, and a weak one lets that cylinder misfire under load. When the misfire sits in one cylinder, the computer scan names that cylinder, and the repair plan covers the part we find at fault there.

DUAL-CLUTCH TRANSMISSION SERVICE ON THE GLI

Automatic GLIs from 2019 on use a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission known as a DSG. A DSG runs two automated clutches with their own gearsets. That design takes its own specified fluid and a service on its own mileage schedule, separate from a conventional automatic. Before any fluid comes out, we confirm the gearbox is a dual-clutch unit, and we fill it with the fluid that unit specifies. The 2012-2018 GLI automatic was a six-speed DSG, so we confirm the model year too.

AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS

Regular 2019 and later Jettas use an eight-speed automatic, and through the 2024 model year they were also offered with a six-speed manual. Their smaller turbo engine is a 1.4-liter through the 2021 model year and a 1.5-liter from 2022. That eight-speed sits behind both engines. From 2025 on, the regular Jetta comes with the eight-speed automatic only, while the GLI kept a six-speed manual through 2026. We service the eight-speed automatic with the fluid specified for it, and we repair clutches on the manual cars.
