Brake Replacement

Does Your FB20 Engine Burn Oil Between Changes?
Many drivers of 2013-2015 Crosstreks notice their 2.0L FB20 engines tend to burn oil quickly, sometimes as fast as a quart every 1,000-2,000 miles between oil changes. This excessive oil consumption results from a defect with the piston rings and other internal components.
To correct the issue, the engine needs to be partially disassembled to replace piston rings, valve stem seals, and related parts. Subaru has acknowledged the problem in service bulletin WTY-84. Until repairs can be made, diligent oil level checks and top-offs are essential to prevent engine damage.
Is Your CVT Transmission Jerking or Hesitating?
Frustrating transmission issues are common in Crosstreks, especially 2013-2017 models equipped with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Owners often notice pronounced shuddering, delay, or lack of power when accelerating. This usually happens at low speeds or when getting up to highway speeds.
Subaru traced the problem to faulty transmission control module (TCM) programming. They released a software update to recalibrate the TCM (technical service bulletin 16-103-17R). If shuddering persists after the update, the CVT may need to be overhauled or replaced entirely.
Why Do the Windshields Crack So Easily?
Crosstrek windshields seem extra vulnerable to cracks and chips compared to other vehicles. Several factors likely contribute, including the windshield’s steep rake angle and the vehicle’s relatively low ground clearance. Road debris kicks up easily, causing small glass defects to form.
We recommend checking for chips and cracks during routine washes. Use a high-quality glass repair resin to seal minor chips. This prevents further spreading. For longer cracks, the windshield needs replacement right away. Adding a protective film or windshield guard provides inexpensive insurance against road damage.
Brake Lights Stuck On? Check the Switch
If your Crosstrek seems possessed by ghosts – headlights flickering, brake lights stuck on, push-button start malfunctioning – chances are the brake light switch has failed. This common electrical gremlin affects 2013-2017 models in particular.
Luckily, Subaru issued a recall (WQY-61) and will replace the faulty switch for free. Until then, use the manual release lever under the dash to shift out of park in an emergency. Just be extremely careful not to drive without functioning brake lights. Schedule a brake switch replacement right away to get all systems working properly again.
White Smoke From the Tailpipe? Watch For Head Gasket Failure
While less common than other issues, some Crosstreks eventually suffer blown head gaskets and leaks. This tends to happen most as higher-mileage vehicles age. However, premature failures have occurred among FB-series flat-four engines.
Warning signs include white exhaust smoke, engine overheating, or losing coolant without an obvious external leak. Repairing this issue is extremely important to avoid severe engine damage, so schedule an inspection as soon as any of those symptoms arise. Be prepared for a lengthy repair process – replacing head gaskets and machining the cylinder heads is no small task.
Do You Hear Clunking Noises From the Suspension?
The Crosstrek suspension withstands moderate off-road use well. However, components like struts, control arm bushings, and sway bar links still wear out – often faster than expected. Owners who drive over rough terrain or unpaved roads tend to experience premature wear.
Listen for clunking noises that indicate worn-out shocks or bushings. Watch for scalloped-looking tread wear as another sign parts need replacement. Keeping up with suspension maintenance will improve ride comfort, handling, and tire life.
Electrical Drain Keeping You Jump Starting?
Modern vehicles have complex electrical systems. So when Crosstreks get drained batteries or won’t start, tracking down the cause takes some investigation. The culprit might be a faulty alternator, shorted accessory wire, or even a glitchy telematics system.
Whatever the source, continual battery drain or “parasitic draw” is no small annoyance. Our technicians use specialized diagnostic tools to methodically trace electrical faults. Whether it’s a bad battery cell or wiring issue, we don’t stop until finding the exact cause. Then we can get your Crosstrek starting reliably again.
