BMW 3 SERIES REPAIR SERVICES
3 SERIES
Here at Precision Auto Care, we're a local BMW 3 Series repair shop in San Leandro, CA. The 3 Series covers many generations and several engine families, so the items below apply to particular engines instead of every car wearing the badge. Owners who keep a 3 Series past warranty want it to drive the way it did when they bought it.
Oil leaks come up often on these cars, and the reason has less to do with the mess underneath than with where the oil travels. We identify the engine first and scope the work from there. The services listed here cover what we perform most on the 3 Series.

Major Tune-Up
A major tune-up on your 3 Series begins with spark plug replacement and an oil service. We look at the ignition coils while the plugs are out, since the two sit together in the same wells. Belts and hoses get examined for cracking, and anything hardened comes off the car. Wiper blades and fluid levels get handled at the same visit. We rotate the tires before the car comes down off the lift.
Brake Replacement
We measure pad thickness and rotor condition together on every 3 Series brake inspection. A change in pedal feel over a few weeks is worth mentioning when you call us. Noise under braking gives us a starting point for where to look first. Catching brake wear early keeps the work confined to the parts that have worn.
OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKET LEAKS
The oil filter housing gasket hardens after years of heat cycling on several BMW engine families. Oil escaping from that gasket runs down the front and side of the engine. From there it can reach the accessory belt area, the alternator, cooling hoses, and nearby electrical connections. Oil on a drive belt shortens its life, and oil in a connector creates faults that look unrelated to a leak. We trace the leak to its source and inspect whatever the oil reached on the way down.
VALVE COVER GASKET LEAKS
The valve cover gasket is another common leak point across these engines. Oil that reaches hot exhaust components produces visible smoke and a burning smell at stoplights. Oil collecting in the spark plug wells soaks the plugs and the rubber coil boots. Misfires can follow once that happens, and new plugs alone will not hold. We replace the gasket first and then address whatever the oil damaged underneath it.
TIMING CHAIN WEAR ON N20 AND N26 ENGINES
Four-cylinder turbocharged 3 Series cars built with the N20 and N26 engines developed timing chain and guide problems. A rattle at cold start is the first thing owners notice on an affected car. A drivetrain warning message can appear on the dash during the same period. BMW revised the chain and guide components, and the later B46 and B48 engines hold up considerably better. We confirm which engine your car carries and inspect the chain on the affected ones.
ELECTRIC WATER PUMP AND COOLING SYSTEM
Several 3 Series engine families use an electric water pump in place of a belt driven one. The thermostat and the plastic expansion tank sit alongside it as wear items. A cooling system warning message, a radiator fan running unusually hard, or a reduced power mode can all point this direction. An electric pump can stop with very little warning, and stored pump or thermostat faults help confirm it. We look at cooling components on a schedule for that reason.
CHARGE PIPE CRACKS ON TURBOCHARGED MODELS
Boost pressure travels from the intercooler to the throttle body through a plastic charge pipe on turbocharged models. Years of heat cycling make that plastic brittle, and cracks often start at the coupler closest to the throttle body. Drivers report a rush of air under acceleration followed by a drivetrain malfunction message. The computer may store an underboost or airflow fault, and no code names the cracked pipe itself. A smoke or pressure test locates the leak, and we replace the pipe along with the coupler.
