The step it stops short of is identifying which component failed on your particular car. We Record Everything Before We Erase Anything
Our first move on a TLX with the light on is writing down every stored and pending code. Erasing a code removes evidence that the rest of the diagnosis depends on. The original freeze frame snapshot disappears with it and cannot be brought back. A returning fault may store a fresh snapshot later, though the conditions behind it can differ. We also note whether the light burns steady or flashes, since a flashing light points toward an active misfire.
Clearing the Code Creates a Second Problem in California
Your TLX will not pass a smog check while the check engine light is on. Many owners already know that and try turning the light off ahead of the appointment. Clearing a code also resets the emissions self tests that your Acura runs on its own while you drive. A car with freshly reset monitors generally cannot pass until those tests complete through normal driving. The underlying fault sits in place through all of it, so we look for the fault first.
Every Code Carries the Conditions It Was Set Under
Freeze frame is the piece most owners have never heard about. At the instant a code sets, your Acura stores engine speed, engine load, and coolant temperature. A technician reads those saved numbers and learns where to go looking. A misfire that occurred at highway speed under heavy load stays invisible while the engine idles in a service bay. We read the stored conditions and then reproduce them on a road test.
Some Codes Describe Effects of a Fault Somewhere Else
A persistent misfire distorts the data the emissions system relies on to judge itself. Oxygen sensor readings and fuel trim numbers can both drift while the misfire continues. Unburned fuel reaching the converter can damage it and set additional emissions faults over time. Replacing the parts those later codes name can leave the original misfire untouched. Sorting causes from effects is most of what a diagnosis involves on a modern engine.
We Test the Car and Then We Verify the Repair
Per-cylinder misfire counters get watched during a road test, and a climbing counter identifies the cylinder. Our bi-directional scan tool commands components on so we can see what responds. Live sensor data fills in the rest of the picture while the engine runs under load. After the repair, your Acura needs a drive cycle before those self tests finish running.
